Richard
Johnston Cook, D.S.M. "At one time he was based in Portsmouth, on HMS Vernon, a shore-based ship, being taught mine-sweeping duties. Later, I know he was in Egypt. (Mark Gooding, grandson) HMS Vernon was the Admiralty Torpedo, Mining and Electrical Training Establishment.
In 1944 he was aboard BYMS
2075, a minesweeper. "As I understand it, he was awarded the DSM for great gallantry whilst in the process of mine clearing, but not for mine clearing. It was for the repair of a failed ship. He stayed on board and, after long hours of work, got the engines working, even though the crew had got off and were making ready to go ashore. The crew was then able to rejoin the ship and not be left behind in enemy territory. I think this was in 1944 when mines had been laid in the Scheldt river in southern Holland. (Mark Gooding, grandson)
