Dear Mother and Father,

Excuse my not having answered your letter earlier but you can quite understand that the holidays have not allowed one much opportunity for writing.  Any how now the holidays are once more over I have time again.

I am very sorry that you do not seem to be able to agree with me fully in this matter of my marriage but I was really convinced that this was a matter where I was compelled to follow my own inclinations.  As to where and how I am to live, I have still twelve months service to do, and have found a very fine billet for myself in one of the nicest parts of town, so I shall live there so long, and as to how, well I can manage very well on my pay out here - and save money in the bargain.  Nevertheless I shall be stopping the allowance this week, and would be very pleased if you would send me all the money I possess, which isn't much, I know, but I shall require it.  The marriage is to take place either on the 23rd. or the 30th. of this month - depending on when I can get leave, as we naturally want to go away for a couple of weeks.  I also want to tell you that Else is very much upset that you do not appear to be fully in agreement with me, or rather with us, but you will very soon accustom yourselves to the idea, especially if you get to know her.

We have been away from Cologne over the holidays and have visited various friends and relatives of Elsa.  On Saturday we were in Neuse, which is only a few miles north of Cologne, and spent the night with an old school friend of Else's who is going to be bridesmaid at the wedding:  on Sunday we were in Orefield, still a few miles further north, and Monday we were in Dusseldorf, the newly occupied town, where Else has an uncle.  The weather has been nothing particular, although it has not rained, but on Sunday, when we should have made a cycle tour from Orefeld the wind was so strong as to make it impossible.

I have not yet had any letter from Tommy, and I cant see that this particular affair is any concern of his.  Anyhow, I hope that when he does write he doesn't take it upon himself to criticise my action, since I'm afraid that in that case I should be called upon to write him an unfriendly letter.  Still, from what I know of Tommy I don't supose that this will be necessary.

I remembered St. Patrick's Day very well indeed, and I was intensely disappointed that you forgot to send me a shamrock.  I also celebrated the day, much to the amusement of several good frends, who couldn't be got to understand what it all meant.

I don't think I have a great deal more to write, except that I am in splendid health and spirits, as is also my future wife, and we should both be very pleased to receive a nice letter from you and from the rest of our relatives at home wishing us the best of luck in our new state.

Give my love to all at home, and please write again at the earliest opportunity.

Your loving son, Frank
