Reminiscences of my mother by Pat Cuckle

"I don't remember my mother saying much about her childhood, apart from going first to St. Mary's in Wilton Street and then on to St. Mary's Grammar school.  I remember her saying many times that she never liked school and she left without any qualifications, something she regretted later on.  After leaving school at 15, as far as I know, she stayed at home and helped her mother until the start of WW2.

She joined the Land Army but didn't much like life in rural Lincolnshire, so joined the WAAF and spent the rest of the war stationed at Cranwell.  I think that this must have been an exciting time for her.  As children, on Sunday afternoons, we liked to settle down and hear her stories about people that she met in the Forces.  Fred, my father, was from the same area of Hull;  he was stationed at Wittering and they married in 1942.  He was posted to North Africa for quite a while and my mother continued in the WAAF;  Kevin, the first child was born just after the war ended.

For the next 20 years my mother's life was occupied with raising the growing family, looking after grandma and keeping up with her brothers and sisters.  When they got together they could talk and laugh for hours on end.  It's a wonder that she could fit in other occupations - crossword puzzles, avid reading and regular visits to the library and answering most of the questions on radio quiz programmes.  Once the youngest child was settled at school my mother found a paid job;  it started with filling in on a temporary basis as a welfare assistant which somehow turned into more than 10 years as a lunchtime assistant at a special unit.

When the older children married my parents loved to visit them in their own homes - my mother was a very easy guest to entertain, she always took an interest in and appreciated trips to new places.  One of her greatest pleasures in later life was to hear about the varied lives and occupations of her children.
