Transcript of Letter from Joe to his sister Annie

July 4th 1923 U.S.A.

Dear Annie,

You will, no doubt, be surprised to hear where I am.  I suppose Mother will have told you about my having signed on a ship as 2nd Steward.  Well, when I reached Philadelphia I left the ship along with an Italian who was on the same ship, and we have got a job on a fishing boat.  You see the money was no good on the ship but I didn't realise until I reached U.S.A. and compared the money and I couldn't resist the offer I got on the fishing boat.  I'll just compare the two.  On the ship I got 23 dollars (£4.10s.) a month.  On this job I get 70 dollars (£14.5s).  I don't intend staying here more than 1 year.

Well, dear sister, I hope you are enjoying over in the old country.

You are among plenty of friends and I don't suppose you are lonely.

It is a fine place where I am now.  A big seaside the name of Wildwood.  I am finished at 4.30 p.m. every night and I go swimming every night.

I have plenty of work to do but I get good food and good money so I am more than contented.

Well dear Annie I think this is all for the time being.  Please write me soon and let me know how you and everyone is.  My address is c/o Consolidated Fish Company, Wildwood, New Jersey, USA.

I remain your loving brother Joe.

My best regards to everyone.  Write me soon.
